Kathleen Norris on Prayer

When I come across an writer that is really good, I start collecting everything they have written.  Kathleen Norris who is best known as the author of “The Cloister Walk” is one of those writers that I keep reading.  I recently finished “Dakota” and am ready to read “Acedia and Me”.  Terry and I got to hear her speak in Ottawa a couple of years ago just after she released that book.

Here’s a prayer quote of hers via Inward/Outward.

Prayer is not doing, but being. It is not words but the beyond-words experience of coming into the presence of something much greater than oneself. It is an invitation to recognize holiness, and to utter simple words—”Holy, Holy, Holy”—in response. Attentiveness is all; I sometimes think of prayer as a certain quality of attention that comes upon me when I’m busy doing something else.
